Outreach Committee

Meetings: 6:30-8:30 pm on the Fourth Tuesday of each month | St John’s Centre

The Outreach Committee works to ensure that St John’s actively participates in outreach activities in our community and beyond. By caring for those in our community, St John’s demonstrates God’s love in action. St John’s is committed to outreach (community support) as part of our values. We aim to identify potential partnerships in outreach and community involvement, while we monitor and maintain existing partnerships.

Looking for new members?

Yes. Do you have a passion for local and global mission? We need help developing partnerships (with churches, schools, and universities) and managing our grants programme. We’re looking for people who can come to our monthly meetings and undertake promotional tasks between these meetings.

communications committee

Meetings: second Tuesday of each month | St John’s Centre
Convenor: Allister Lane (Acting)

This committee helps get the word out about the various activities of St John’s. It is most well-known for producing the eye-catching signs on the corner of Willis and Dixon Streets, but also produces the quarterly Messenger newsletter, develops the Annual Report, looks after the website and social media aspects of church communications, and helps other committees when needed.

Looking for new members?

Yes. If you’ve got skills in graphic design, photography or experience with InDesign, Photoshop, social media, and copywriting we’d love to have a chat about how you can help us! New ideas are also welcome.

In return, you’d get valuable communications experience, as we look after lots of different channels and use a range of media to communicate with St John’s and the wider community.

Finance committee

Meetings: quarterly in February, May, August, and November
Convenor: Ross Chesney

This committee manages the budget and investments of St John’s. We work to ensure that we can continue to provide spiritual and educational programmes, as well as fund routine maintenance and upkeep of the Church itself.

Looking for new members?

Yes. We are always looking out for new members. You need to have financial or economic qualifications and/or experience. You’ll gain experience of financial management and administration in the charities/not-for-profit sector.

property committee

This group looks after all of St John’s property, a portfolio that includes the Church, our grounds, the Troup House commercial space, and the Church manse. The committee works keep our property maintained and suitable for use.

Looking for new members?

Yes. Engineering or organisational experience or similar would be helpful but not essential. All are welcome, including young people.

You’ll gain experience in dealing with property-related matters – which is good practice for owning a house.  You’ll also get experience in co-operating, compromising, and considering as we make strategic plans for the future.

Health & Safety Committee

Meetings: three times a year, organised as needed | St John’s Church Office
Convenor: karin duncan

The health and safety committee works to ensure the safety of our congregation, visitors, and clients. They proactively address hazards as discovered, improve accessibility, and plan ahead for on-site disruptions such as the earthquake strengthening project. While St John’s relies heavily on volunteers, we recognise our responsibility to uphold the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and work to keep it front of mind in everything we do.

If you have any issues concerning health and safety, please raise it with an elder or the ministry team. This will be recorded in the log book, which is kept in the church office and responded to by the Health and Safety Committee. It is also important to know that although there is a committee we are all responsibility for looking after each other’s well-being.

Looking for new members?

Yes. Ideally you’d have knowledge of Work Safe practices and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. However, a willingness to learn and being available to help goes a long way!

You’ll find out more about the life of our St John’s community, and become more aware of areas that could be improved.

social committee

Meetings: as needed | online via email

Whenever there is a social event, such as the shared lunches after each Quarterly Communion, the fantastic Social Committee is in the background preparing, serving, and cleaning up after all the fun.

Looking for new members?

Yes. If you’ve got a background in food preparation, or just like mucking around in the kitchen, there’s a place for you on our team! You’ll be able to meet and serve members of the wider St John's congregation through our activities.
