Monika Demuth-Barber is our Children and Families Worker. She works with Enrino (Ino) Pasullean and a large team of volunteers who deliver an interactive and engaging Sunday morning programme for the children. In addition, a number of other child and family friendly activities are held throughout the year.
The St J’s Kids programme runs every Sunday during the school term. On Sundays during the school holidays or long weekends there is a holiday programme for the children.
Children generally join the adults for the first part of the 10 am church service. A separate children’s order of service is available for children to collect in the church foyer to guide them through the service. Children’s bibles are also available in the front pews on the right side of the church.
Following the children’s talk in church and a blessing, St J’s Kids leave church for their own programme in the St John’s Centre (adjacent to the church). This programme runs through to 11.15 am allowing parents and caregivers time for a cup of tea or coffee in the church foyer after the service before collecting their child(ren).
On the second Sunday of each month during term time, the children start out at St J’s Kids at 10 am, then return to church at approximately 10.40 am to join the wider congregation for Communion.
During St J’s Kids, the children all gather together briefly for ‘joint time’ before dividing into separate age-based groups.
The theme for St J’s Kids this year is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30), and so the group names are:
The St J’s Kids programme generally follows the lectionary readings and primarily uses the Seasons of the Spirit Curriculum, although supplemental resources are also often used.
The aims of St J’s Kids are to:
St John’s in the City is a member of the ‘Kids Friendly’ network. Kids Friendly is an initiative of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa that recognises the vital contribution children and families make to healthy congregations and aims to equip churches to intentionally minister to children and families.
Visitors are always welcome. Introduce yourself to the children’s greeter in the foyer on arrival and they will explain what is happening that morning, or let us know that you are coming and we can organise to meet you.
